Visiting Poole and the Area

Poole is set on the beautiful Dorset coast, just east of the Jurassic Coast, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The town sits on Sandbanks beach, part of a nine-mile-stretch of sand along the coast between Poole and Hengistbury Head.

Poole really does have something for everyone. There are museums and galleries, shops and restaurants and every water sport you can think of, all set in a stunning location on the largest natural harbour in Europe.

Activities Near Poole

With amazing beaches all around the obvious activities are watersports. Hamworthy Park and Poole Park are both just a short distance from the centre of town and have watersports and other activities.

If you want somewhere a bit quieter, head across the bay from Poole to Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve.  There are fabulous walks and the glorious Knoll beach, a long stretch of sandy beach with watersports, a cafe and a carpark, perfect for a day at the seaside.

Things to do with Kids Near Poole

There’s also plenty to see and do in the area with children. Take a drive to the New Forest for the day to see the ponies and stop off at Liberty's Owl, Raptor & Reptile Centre to try a bit of falconry. Or visit the Oceanarium on the promenade in Bournemouth where there are sharks, penguins, crocodiles and even otters to see and an underwater tunnel you can walk through.

Even if it’s not beach weather, you can keep the kids entertained at Tower Park with a cinema, ten pin bowling and play areas for younger children. For some high-energy fun head to Splashdown Waterpark with its 13 different slides of varying fear-factors that will get the whole family screaming.

Things to see near Poole

Poole Museum is down by the waterfront and covers 2000 years of local history. The collections are spread out across four historic buildings linked by a modern atrium.

A short drive out of town will take you to Upton Country Park with its Georgian Mansion, pretty walled garden and large parkland.

Garden lovers should visit Compton Acres, east of Poole towards Bournemouth, where there are several gardens including a formal Italian garden and a stunning Japanese garden. You can even buy some of the plants there to take home with you if you are feeling inspired.

An additional refuelling charge may apply at some locations.
  • A full tank of fuel is not guaranteed.
